Targeted massage for stubborn muscle tension, stiffness and restricted mobility

If your muscles feel persistently tight, your shoulders never seem to drop, or a particular area keeps becoming stiff after work, training or everyday activity, deep tissue massage can provide a targeted way to address the problem. At Cambridge Massage Clinic in Trumpington, I use deep tissue and remedial massage techniques to help reduce muscular tension, improve movement, and help you feel more at ease in your body.

Deep Tissue Massage - Cambridge Massage Clinic

I’m Jonathan, a qualified remedial and sports massage therapist with more than 20 years’ experience in Cambridge. My approach is practical and individual: we start with what is bothering you, assess the areas that may be contributing, and adapt treatment to your comfort, goals and response. Deep tissue massage does not mean simply pressing harder. Effective treatment is controlled, specific and appropriate to the tissue being worked on.

The clinic is at 102A Foster Road, Trumpington, Cambridge CB2 9JR. Appointments are available to people who need help with muscular tightness, desk-related tension, training fatigue or a recurring sense of restriction.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a form of therapeutic massage that works deliberately with muscles and surrounding soft tissues, often focusing on areas that feel tight, overloaded or restricted. The word “deep” can be misleading: the goal isn't to apply maximum pressure. Instead, the therapist may work more slowly, apply sustained pressure, adjust angles, or focus on particular layers and structures so the treatment reaches the area that needs attention.

A session can include broad massage strokes as well as more focused soft-tissue work. Depending on what I find and what you are comfortable with, I may incorporate techniques commonly used in remedial and sports massage, including trigger-point work, myofascial techniques, cross-fibre work and assisted movement or stretching. I tailor the treatment rather than delivering a standard routine to every client. Some areas can feel tender when they are already sensitive, but treatment should remain within a tolerable range. You are always encouraged to tell me if the pressure is too much, too little, or simply does not feel useful. More pressure is not automatically better.

Who Is Deep Tissue Massage For?

You do not need to be an athlete to benefit from a focused massage. Many people who book deep-tissue massage in Cambridge are dealing with the effects of everyday modern life: long hours at a computer, commuting, repetitive work, lifting, gardening, parenting, gym sessions, or simply feeling that certain muscles are constantly tense.

  • Office workers with persistent neck, shoulder or upper-back tension
  • Runners, cyclists, gym users and other active people with heavily worked muscles
  • People who feel stiff after long periods of sitting or driving
  • People whose back, hips, legs or shoulders feel tight or restricted
  • Anyone who prefers a focused therapeutic massage rather than a purely relaxation-based treatment
  • People looking for regular muscular maintenance alongside an active or demanding lifestyle

Areas I Commonly Work On

Deep tissue massage can target one main problem area or span several connected areas. For example, a stiff shoulder may involve the upper back, chest and neck as well as the spot where you notice the discomfort. A tight lower back may involve the hips and surrounding muscles. Treatment is therefore guided by the pattern you present with rather than by a single painful point.

  • Neck and shoulders
  • Upper and lower back
  • Hips and gluteal muscles
  • Hamstrings and quadriceps
  • Calves and lower legs
  • Forearms and areas affected by repetitive desk or manual work

Deep Tissue Massage for Neck and Shoulder Tension

Neck and shoulder tightness is one of the most common reasons people seek massage. Hours spent using a laptop, phone or multiple screens can leave the upper back and shoulders feeling tired and tense. Stress can worsen this because many people habitually brace or elevate their shoulders without noticing.

A focused session can work through the upper back, shoulder girdle and neck, with pressure adjusted carefully around sensitive structures. Where appropriate, I may also work with the chest or surrounding tissues if they appear to be contributing to the restriction. The aim is to leave you feeling freer and more comfortable rather than simply sore from an overly forceful massage.

Deep Tissue Massage for Back and Hip Tightness

Back and hip tension can build up for many reasons, including prolonged sitting, repetitive activity, changes in training load or physically demanding work. Because several muscle groups contribute to movement around the pelvis and spine, treatment may include the lower back, gluteal region, hips and legs rather than focusing only on one small area.

Massage is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical assessment when symptoms suggest something more serious. However, when the main issue is muscular tightness or stiffness, a carefully targeted session can help manage how your body feels and moves.

Deep Tissue Massage for Runners, Cyclists and Gym Users

Cambridge has a large community of runners, cyclists, and gym users, and repetitive training can overload specific muscle groups. Runners may notice tight calves, hamstrings or hips; cyclists often request work on the legs, hips, back and shoulders; strength training can cause localised muscular fatigue and stiffness. For active clients, you can use deep tissue techniques as part of a sports massage or as a stand-alone treatment. The emphasis depends on your current training, the areas that feel restricted, and whether your priority is general maintenance, recovery or addressing a specific muscular problem.

Deep Tissue Massage vs Sports Massage

Main focus

  • Deep Tissue Massage
Persistent muscular tension, stiffness and restricted soft tissue.
  • Sports Massage
Activity, training demands, recovery, performance and sport-related muscular issues.

Who it suits

  • Deep Tissue Massage
Active and inactive clients, including office workers.
  • Sports Massage
Athletes, recreational exercisers and active people.

.

Techniques

  • Deep Tissue Massage
Slow, focused pressure and targeted soft-tissue techniques.
  • Sports Massage
May combine deep-tissue work with movement, stretching and sports/remedial techniques.

Pressure

  • Deep Tissue Massage
Adapted to the area and your tolerance, not simply 'as hard as possible'.
  • Sports Massage
Also adapted to the purpose of the session and to the stage of training or recovery.

There is considerable overlap between the two. Because I am trained in sports and remedial massage, I can draw from both approaches rather than forcing your session into a rigid category. If you are unsure which to book, choose the treatment that best describes your main goal, and we can adapt it when you arrive.

What Happens at Your Appointment?

1. We discuss what you want help with
Before treatment, I will ask about the area that is bothering you, how long it's been present, what aggravates or eases it, your activity or work demands, and any relevant health information. This helps make the session purposeful from the start.

2. Treatment is tailored to you
I will focus on the areas most relevant to your goal, using pressure and techniques appropriate to your body and comfort. You can give feedback at any time. If an area is too sensitive, I can change the approach.

3. We reassess how the area feels
Where useful, we can assess comfortable movement before and after working on an area. This is not about promising an instant cure; it is a practical way to see whether the treatment has changed the sensation of restriction and to guide what we do next.

4. Simple aftercare where appropriate
You may receive straightforward suggestions, such as gentle movement, stretching, or changes to training or desk habits, where these fit your situation. Some people experience mild, temporary tenderness after a focused massage, particularly if an area was already sensitive.

Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?

Deep tissue massage can feel intense, but it should not be a test of how much pain you can tolerate. Working pressure may produce a strong sensation or tenderness in a tight area, but sharp, alarming, or excessive pain is a reason to reduce pressure or stop. Good communication is important throughout the session.

The best treatment is not necessarily the hardest. Working too aggressively can make it difficult to relax and may leave an area unnecessarily irritated. I prefer controlled, progressive pressure and adjust the technique according to how the tissue and client respond.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

No single number suits everyone. Some people book one session for a temporary build-up of muscular tension. Others find that a short series of appointments or periodic maintenance works better for a recurring pattern. The right frequency depends on your goals, how long the problem has been present, your workload or training, and how you respond.

I do not believe in booking people into unnecessary treatment plans. We can discuss what seems sensible after your first session.

When Should You Avoid or Delay Deep Tissue Massage?

Massage is not appropriate in every situation. Please tell me about any relevant medical conditions, recent surgery, medication, pregnancy, skin problems or recent injuries before treatment. A session may need to be modified, postponed or referred for medical advice if there is a concern such as fever or acute illness, a contagious skin condition, a suspected blood clot, significant unexplained swelling, a recent serious injury, or symptoms that require medical assessment.

If you have severe or worsening pain, new numbness or weakness, significant trauma, unexplained symptoms, or are worried that your problem may not be muscular, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on massage.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Pressure is only one part of deep tissue work. A skilled session may use slower strokes, sustained pressure, different angles and focused soft-tissue techniques. The aim is effective, tolerable treatment rather than maximum force.
